After growing up in western Pennsylvania, he received his PhD from the University of Toronto in 1988 and took his first teaching position at St. Bonaventure University. From 1994, he taught at Catholic University of America, where he came to hold the Father Kurt Pritzl Chair, until his retirement in 2023. Professor Noone was particularly renowned for his work on Franciscan scholasticism, and he played an important role in many critical editions that appeared in recent decades, most notably Scotus’s Opera philosophica and, still forthcoming, Scotus’s Opera Parisiensia. He served as president of the ACPA and the SMRP, and vice-president of the SIEPM. Those who crossed his path at conferences may remember his inspired playing of the harmonica.
