"Un piccolo angolo di Australia nell'antica città di Roma": così Benedetto XVI ha definito il nuovo centro di accoglienza per i pellegrini australiani nell'Urbe, inaugurato mercoledì pomeriggio, 19 ottobre, nel corso di una breve visita alla struttura.

Your Eminence, dear Brother Bishops, Your Excellencies, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen, I am very pleased to be with you for these celebrations to mark the opening of the Domus Australia, the Australian Pilgrimage Centre in Rome. On this occasion, I recall with particular gratitude the warmth of the hospitality that was extended to me when I visited your country for World Youth Day in 2008, and now I have the opportunity to reciprocate by welcoming all of you to Rome.
I thank Cardinal Pell for inviting me to join you this evening, and for his kind words. I also thank Saint Mary's Cathedral Choir for their praise of God in song. In addition to greeting my brother Bishops, here for their Ad Limina visit, I would like to greet His Excellency Timothy Fischer, Australian Ambassador to the Holy See, and the other Ambassadors present. I am pleased to salute the Rector of the Domus, Father Anthony Denton, and Mr Gabriel Griffa and his staff. I am also happy to greet all the people of Australia and to acknowledge the support and assistance of so many of them for this project which, along with your new Embassy, has brought a little corner of Australia to the ancient city of Rome. May the Domus now be blessed by the passage of many pilgrims!
 Almost exactly one year ago, the first Australian saint, Mary MacKillop, was raised to the altars, and I join all of you in giving thanks to God for the many blessings he has already poured out upon the Church in your land through her example. I pray that Saint Mary will continue to inspire many Australians to follow in her footsteps by living lives of holiness, in the service of God and neighbour.
The Lord sent his Apostles out into the whole world, to proclaim the Gospel to all creation (cf. Mk 16:15). This evening's event speaks eloquently of the fruits of the Church's missionary endeavours, by which the Gospel has spread to the very furthest regions of the world, has taken root there and has given birth to a living and thriving Christian community. Like all Christian communities, the Church in Australia is conscious of being on a journey whose ultimate destination lies beyond this world: as Saint Paul expressed it, "our commonwealth is in heaven" (Phil 3:20). Our earthly lives are spent journeying towards that ultimate goal, where "no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" (1 Cor 2:9). Here on earth, the Church's long tradition of pilgrimage to holy places serves to remind us that we are heavenward bound, it refocuses our minds on the call to holiness, it draws us ever closer to the Lord and strengthens us with spiritual food for the journey.
Many generations of pilgrims have made their way to Rome from all over the Christian world, in order to venerate the tombs of the holy Apostles Peter and Paul, and thereby to deepen their communion in the one Church of Christ, founded on the Apostles. In so doing, they strengthen the roots of their faith; and roots, as we know, are the source of life-giving sustenance. In that sense, pilgrims to Rome should always feel at home here, and the Domus Australia will play an important part in creating a home for Australian pilgrims in the city of the Apostles. Yet roots are only a part of the story. According to a saying attributed to a great poet from my own country, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, there are two things that children should receive from their parents: roots and wings. From our holy Mother, the Church, we too receive both roots and wings: the faith of the Apostles, handed down from generation to generation, and the grace of the Holy Spirit, conveyed above all through the sacraments of the Church. Pilgrims to this city return to their homelands renewed and strengthened in their faith, and borne aloft by the Holy Spirit in the journey onward and upward to their heavenly home.
My prayer today is that the pilgrims who pass through this house will indeed return to their homes with firmer faith, more joyful hope and more ardent love for the Lord, ready to commit themselves with fresh zeal to the task of bearing witness to Christ in the world in which they live and work. And I pray too that their visit to the See of Peter will deepen their love for the universal Church and unite them more closely with Peter's Successor, charged with feeding and gathering into one the Lord's flock from every corner of the world. Commending all of them, and all of you, to the intercession of Our Lady, Help of Christians and Saint Mary MacKillop, I gladly impart my Apostolic Blessing as a pledge of the joys that await us in our eternal home.

Eminenza, cari Fratelli Vescovi, Eccellenze, distinti ospiti, signore e signori,
sono molto lieto di essere con voi durante queste celebrazioni che segnano l'apertura della Domus Australia, il Centro di accoglienza per i pellegrini australiani a Roma. In questa occasione, ricordo con gratitudine particolare l'affettuosa ospitalità che mi fu riservata quando visitai il Paese per la Giornata Mondiale della Gioventù del 2008 e che ora ho l'opportunità di ricambiare, accogliendo voi tutti a Roma.
Ringrazio il Cardinale Pell per avermi invitato a unirmi a voi questa sera e per le sue cortesi parole. Ringrazio anche il coro della cattedrale di Saint Mary per i canti di lode innalzati a Dio. Oltre a salutare i miei fratelli Vescovi, qui per la loro visita ad limina, desidero salutare Sua Eccellenza Timothy Fischer, Ambasciatore dell'Australia presso la Santa Sede. e gli altri ambasciatori presenti. Sono lieto di salutare il Rettore della Domus, Padre Anthony Denton, il signor Gabriel Griffa e tutto il suo staff. Circa un anno fa, la prima santa australiana, Mary MacKillop, è stata elevata agli onori degli altari e io mi unisco a tutti voi nel rendere grazie a Dio per le numerose benedizioni che ha già riversato sulla Chiesa nel vostro Paese grazie al suo esempio. Prego affinché ella continui a ispirare molti australiani a seguire le sue orme conducendo una vita di santità, al servizio di Dio e del prossimo.
Il Signore ha inviato i suoi apostoli in tutto il mondo, per annunciare il Vangelo a tutte le creature (cfr. Mc 16, 15). L'avvenimento di questa sera parla in modo eloquente dei frutti degli sforzi missionari, per mezzo dei quali il Vangelo si è diffuso perfino nelle regioni più remote del mondo, vi si è radicato e ha dato vita a una comunità cristiana viva e prospera. Come tutte le comunità cristiane, la Chiesa in Australia è consapevole di percorrere un cammino la cui destinazione ultima è al di là di questo mondo: come ha detto san Paolo, "La nostra cittadinanza infatti è nei cieli" (Fil 3, 20). Trascorriamo la nostra esistenza terrena in viaggio verso quella meta ultima, in cui "quelle cose che occhio non vide, né orecchio udì, né mai entrarono in cuore di uomo, Dio le ha preparate per coloro che lo amano" (1 Cor 2, 9). Qui sulla terra, la lunga tradizione di pellegrinaggio della Chiesa nei luoghi santi serve a ricordarci che siamo diretti verso il cielo. Richiama la nostra attenzione sulla vocazione alla santità, ci porta sempre più vicino al Signore e ci rafforza con nutrimento spirituale per il nostro viaggio.
Molte generazioni di pellegrini hanno percorso questa via verso Roma da tutto il mondo cristiano, per venerare le tombe dei santi Pietro e Paolo e approfondire in tal modo la loro comunione con l'unica Chiesa di Cristo, fondata sugli Apostoli. Così facendo, rafforzano le radici della loro fede e le radici, come sappiamo, sono la fonte del nutrimento donatore di vita. In tal senso, i pellegrini a Roma dovrebbero sempre sentirsi a casa, e la Domus Australia svolgerà un ruolo importante nel creare una casa per i pellegrini australiani nella città degli apostoli. Tuttavia, le radici sono solo una parte della storia. Secondo un detto attribuito a un grande poeta del mio Paese, Joahnn Wolfgang von Goethe, ci sono due cose che i bambini dovrebbero ricevere dai propri genitori: radici e ali. Anche dalla nostra santa madre Chiesa riceviamo sia radici sia ali: la fede degli apostoli, tramandata di generazione in generazione, e la grazia dello Spirito Santo, trasmessa soprattutto attraverso i Sacramenti della Chiesa. I pellegrini che sono stati in questa città tornano nei loro Paesi rinnovati e rafforzati nella fede ed elevati dallo Spirito Santo nel viaggio in avanti e verso l'alto fino alla loro casa celeste.
Oggi prego affinché i pellegrini che passano in questa casa ritornino alle proprie dimore con fede più salda, speranza più gioiosa e amore più ardente per il Signore, pronti a impegnarsi con nuovo zelo nel compito di rendere testimonianza a Cristo nel mondo in cui vivono e operano. Prego anche affinché la loro visita alla Sede di Pietro renda più profondo il loro amore per la Chiesa universale e li unisca più intimamente al Successore di Pietro, incaricato di nutrire e riunire l'unico gregge del Signore da ogni angolo del mondo. Affidando tutti loro e tutti voi all'intercessione di Nostra Signora, Aiuto dei Cristiani e a santa Mary MacKillop, imparto volentieri la mia Benedizione Apostolica quale pegno delle gioie che ci attendono nella nostra dimora eterna.
